In 2000, as a co-owner and instructor at Golden State Karate School in Santa Rosa, California, I had a difficult decision to make. Our five-year lease on the school was nearly expired and it was time to decide. I was succumbing to chronic injury and my training and sparring had diminished. My enthusiasm for fighting was waning. I knew that if I backed out my partner would follow, and the community we had built up over the years amongst our 100 or so students would disappear. Compounding this was a strong desire to travel and explore the world. I agonized over the question, but it was clear what I must do. Golden State Karate School would close...
At that time I had a friend, a good body worker, who was showing me some techniques of oil massage. I asked him how I might transition in to bodywork and he had a novel idea; go to Thailand and learn Thai massage!!! I had no idea where it was, what it was like, it sounded mysterious and exotic, and I knew immediately that I would go there!
Since then four years have passed. I have met or observed many of the renowned teachers of Thai massage in Thailand. I have studied at Wat Po, Old Medicine Hospital, ITM and I have spent four and half months with master Pichet in Hang Dong. I was very fortunate to meet master Chaiyuth just a week before he died and spend a whole weekend with him during a time of great transition. I have spent over 15 months in Thailand, studying and traveling, and I have even gained basic ability in speaking and reading Thai language. Thailand has been very good to me. I have learned much I would like to share as I travel in my life.
